Libraries often hire student-staff to assist with service provision. With
students’ many responsibilities and contextual factors, it can be
challenging to maintain engagement in part-time roles, risking passive,
disengaged service provision. Effective student support service provision
is grounded in our ability as managers to empower student employees to
develop professional competencies, and to actively shape our services to
address evolving patron needs. How can managers of student-staff foster
motivation, engagement and commitment to part-time work, given competing
commitments and challenges? How can we support student-staff if they fall
short?

This session outlines how we implement four themes of student-staff
motivation (personal and professional development; honoring lived
experience; empowered leadership; and community support) in recruitment,
training, and the workplace.

Date & Time: Thursday, August 11, 2022 at 12-1 p.m. ET

This session will tell you everything you wanted to know about author
visits but were too afraid to ask. Author visits have such an incredible
and long lasting effect on kids and adults, but if you are a librarian in a
smaller library system who is figuring it out all alone, or a book
publicist unfamiliar with the inner workings of a library, it can be
intimidating.

Learn how independent publishers and small- and medium-sized public
libraries can work together to plan successful author events. This session
will outline best practices, from planning and promoting the event to
navigating author fees, book sales, and day-of logistics. Linda Ludke,
Collection Management Librarian at London Public Library, will moderate a
conversation between Bronte Germain of Orca Book Publishing and Sarah
MacNeal of Bracebridge Library.

Date & Time: Thursday, August 18, 2022 at 11-12 p.m. ET

There is evidence that anxiety among contemporary college students is much
higher than previous generations, and steadily increasing. In the aftermath
of the most disruptive years of the pandemic, what does this mean for our
students, and how can librarians respond?

This webinar will look at the effects of anxiety on cognition and learning
and explore the implications for library instruction and services. Finally,
the webinar will offer suggestions ranging from simple changes in practice
or design, to pedagogical approaches aimed at counterbalancing anxiogenic
forces in students’ lives.

*Fee: $45 for members/$55 non-members*
