Hi all:

Fair wages and equity are a battle that I am more than happy to hear APLA taking on.

We know that in almost every arena, wages for women are lower than men and wages for racialized people, people with disabilities, immigrants and first nations are even lower.

I would like to add that salary transparency, while gaining momentum among circles who believe it will enact the desired change is not quite established in the evidence we have so far. It's the sort of thing that seems like it would work, but it's not clear that it will.

For example, this article suggests that transparent salaries equalize primarily by lowering salaries overall. Further, there seems to be no impact whatsoever for non-unionized environments.

https://www.cbc.ca/radio/costofliving/wage-transparency-not-everything-1.6311983#:~:text=Pay%20transparency%20is%20the%20practice,can%20actually%20lower%20your%20pay.
So that I do not end up being the person who acts solely as Devil's Advocate without coming to the table with solutions, I recommend APLA take a look at innovations in Ireland and Portugal to provide voting rights to immigrant status residents at municipal elections as this would both address some aspects of the wage gap, increase opportunities for women entrepreneurs and ultimately encourage libraries to be more accountable to new Canadians while reducing the unfortunate stigma we see in many urban environments.

Sincerely,

Ryan

Hi all:

Thanks for starting this conversation, Courtney. I agree with Richard's point about this being something that APLA could investigate setting up as a matter of policy.

To Courtney's point, organizations have a budget for what they are willing to offer people. Why not just make that explicit? (I mean, I know why organizations don't.) Even providing a range is helpful. Having applicants go through the recruitment process only to pull out because the salary offered isn't what they need is a waste of everyone's time, including HR and hiring committees. If the argument of equity and time wastage doesn't compel those on the listserv to consider this for their own organization, perhaps reading this information on the website Show The Salary will.

I know some other library specific listservs (all Stateside, iirc) have already instituted a policy of not sharing ads that don't provide salary information but it would be great to have APLA show some leadership in this area.

PS-Yes, I purposely sent this to the listserv instead of just Courtney and Richard because I think it's a conversation of larger interest to the profession that we should all be engaged with.

Courtney raises a good point here, although correcting the situation lies with Ms Pottle of the SSL, not with the list. That said, APLA might consider a policy of not accepting adverts without salary information.

Hello,

I’m just wondering if you could please provide the salary information for this job.  Not providing salary information is an equity issue that perpetuates the gender pay gap and discriminates against people of colour.

I look forward to your reply.

Best,

Courtney
