CFLA Committee Update of February 16, 2021

At our February meeting, the CFLA Copyright Committee discussed communications to members about what we’re working on, and how to share this more effectively. This short message on current activities is the outcome of that discussion, and will be produced monthly. The CFLA Copyright Committee:

a.      Held a session with live chat at the OLA Superconference to highlight work underway, and answered questions particularly on CUSMA term extension and controlled digital lending.

b.      Will be coordinating work with the new Indigenous knowledge and data sovereignty working group of the Indigenous Matters Committee

c.       Has been holding consultations with provincial library associations to share challenges related to crown copyright with provincial policy makers. This follows the Committee’s work with federal policy makers in 2020.

d.      Has been discussing CUSMA and term extension since 2016, and has a working group that is drafting a paper discussing the implications and the options to address these. The Committee will be drafting a submission on behalf of CFLA to respond to the federal government’s CUSMA consultation for the deadline of March 12.

e.      Has a working group on controlled digital lending that is drafting a white paper modelled on the US paper by David R. Hansen & Kyle K. Courtney with consideration to Canadian context and law.
