HOUSE FINANCE COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES NEXT STEPS IN ITS 2019 PRE-BUDGET CONSULTATIONS PROCESS
Ottawa, September 11, 2018 -
Today, the Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance, the Honourable Wayne Easter, P.C., M.P., announced the Committee’s hearing schedule as it continues its consultations in advance of the 2019 federal budget.
Between 4 June and 3 August 2018, the Committee received just under 500 briefs from individuals and organizations focused on the topic of economic growth. “I am very pleased to see that so many Canadian groups and individuals shared their budget priorities,” said Mr. Easter. “We have received innovative ideas and proposals that cover a broad range of federal public policy areas, and we are looking forward to our hearings next week.”
Mr. Easter continued: “The Committee will begin its pre-budget hearings on 18 September 2018, and will travel across the country to hear from Canadians and Canadian organizations in their home cities.”
The Committee will hold pre-budget hearings in Ottawa throughout the weeks of 17 and 24 September 2018. The weeks of 1 and 15 October, hearings will be held across Canada in accordance with the following schedule:
1 October: Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
2 October: Saint John, New Brunswick
3 October: Québec City, Quebec
4 October: Oshawa, Ontario
5 October: Toronto, Ontario
15 October: Whitehorse, Yukon
16 October: Victoria, British Columbia
17 October: Edmonton, Alberta
18 October: Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Mr. Easter concluded: “I am happy to announce that the Committee will once again be conducting 'open mic' sessions across Canada, including in Ottawa, for any Canadians who were not invited to make a formal appearance. We invite you to briefly share your views on budgetary priorities, and will hear those that arrive on a first-come, first-served basis. In order to hear from as many Canadians as possible, individuals should limit their remarks to one minute or less.”
Additional details concerning the location of the hearings and registration for the ‘open mic’ sessions will be forthcoming.
