Hi Everyone,

We have been told that we will no longer receive microfilm of the Chronicle Herald (Provincial) edition, which effectively means our microfilm newspaper collection is now closed.

From a preservation and access perspective, this development is concerning.  I realize that these newspapers are available in digital format, but I also know that the databases are not complete.  In the past, I have had to call our database provider and inform them that they were missing pages of a newspaper.  Also, what happens if the database is inaccessible?

The other problem with relying on databases is that pictures and ads are generally not included and we often get asked for these.

So, my question is: Are any libraries planning on contracting with someone to microfilm newspapers, particularly the Chronicle Herald?

I would also welcome any comments on this topic.  Am I too old-fashioned?  Is this a concern for you?

Thanks

David
