The House of Commons Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology (INDU) will hold formal hearings and public, open-mic sessions for the statutory review of the Copyright Act in cities across Canada next week. On Monday, May 7, they will be in Halifax at the Marriott Harbourfront Hotel, Room: Nova Scotia AB. Formal hearings take place between 2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.-5:30 p.m. An open mic session takes place between 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. To participate, individuals must register on location: arrive 30 minutes in advance and bring a piece of identification. Participants will be given two minutes to express their views. More details of these public sessions can be found here: http://www.ourcommons.ca/DocumentViewer/en/42-1/INDU/news-release/9827560 The education community (both P-12 and post-secondary) are very concerned that the Committee understand the views of the education sector, including that fair dealing is good public policy. The creator community has been vocal in the press and at the Committee hearings to date about how the addition of "education" as a fair dealing purpose has gutted the publishing industry in Canada and that authors and creators are suffering; national postsecondary organizations such as Universities Canada and CICan have also spoken at the Committee hearings to date and maintain the fair dealing provision should remain the same, as access to learning materials is essential, and that the publishing industry is not actually suffering. CFLA has raised questions about the transparency and accountability of payments to rights holders, and the Canadian Research Knowledge Network, CAUT and others have also presented to date.
