Hi all,
Over the past two years, a relocation project for the Moncton Public Library generated substantial local controversy. The proposed plan, led by local group MH Renaissance, would have seen the Library move from its current,
purpose-built downtown space to a repurposed heritage building that once housed the Moncton High School. This move was part of a larger project which primarily aimed to save a building to which the local community is very much attached.
As you may remember, APLA sent a letter on this subject (dated July 27, 2016), to various elected officials at the municipal and provincial levels. The letter essentially sought to reiterate concerns about the proposed
move which had already been expressed by the Moncton Public Library Board. Chief among these concerns were the potential reduction in useable space caused by the move which would have forced the Library to reduce its collections and lose precious programming
space, and the lack of consultation with Library administrators concerning the project.
We are happy to share that the Moncton Public Library is no longer threatened with relocation. On August 1, 2017, it was announced that the old Moncton High School building had been purchased from the New Brunswick Provincial
Government by a private developer. This turn of events has been well received, as it will ensure that the heritage building will be maintained while library services to the population of Moncton will not suffer.
