There is no denying the existence of imposter syndrome in countless disciplines and professional practices (just Google it). Feelings of imposter syndrome are common in the modern workplace, including in libraries and other information settings. In this webinar we will use personal experience and research to explore imposter syndrome through the lens of library professionals. So what’s to blame? We’ll talk about competition in the job market, burnout rates, social media and the need for non-traditional skills in a dynamic field. Attendees will have the opportunity to examine and develop strategies for managing imposter syndrome and will leave with tips and tools for managing imposter syndrome.

This session will review the current research about mindfulness and meditation, focusing specifically on information and techniques discussed in “The Mindful Librarian” by Richard Moniz, et al. The presenter will share experiences from her recent participation in the ALA course, “Mindfulness for Librarians: Handling Stress and Thriving Under Pressure” with Richard Moniz and Martin House; and the “Mindfulness and Self Compassion” course offered at the University of Toronto. Mindfulness and meditation can offer effective ways to cope with stress in the workplace and your personal life and many professionals are using this as means to support themselves in difficult situations.
