*DIGITIZING NEWSPAPER COLLECTIONS: HOW TO SHARE YOUR COMMUNITY NEWS ONLINE *

*Jess Posgate *

*Tuesday, June 20 | 1 - 2 PM ET *

Most of our heritage newspaper collections are locally held on microfilm or
archived paper copies, making them difficult and time consuming to access.
Today, researchers of all ages expect to find almost everything online, and
digitizing community newspaper collections not only increases access, but
can build community interaction and help organizations reach an audience
near and far without straining staff and budgets. Join us to learn about
the nuts and bolts of getting started and what to expect when you’re
working with newspapers. We’ll also talk about sustainable approaches to
strategically increasing use of your local history and community
collections.

*PRIVACY & SECURITY: THE FEAR, THE HYPE & WHAT YOU CAN DO *

*Nicole Hennig *

*Wednesday, July 26 | 1 - 2 PM ET *

If you read today’s headlines about security breaches, you might be
thinking of going back to fax machines and snail mail. Or you might be
assuming that privacy is dead and we may as well get used to it (and you
have nothing to hide, right?). While there is no such thing as foolproof
security and privacy, there is a middle ground that you can find by
understanding and using particular techniques. We are in a world where
mobile technologies are everywhere; we need to use them to be productive
and enjoy creative activities.

We’ll discuss answers to these questions & more:

   - Is your laptop or smartphone’s traffic being harvested when on public
   wi-fi?
   - What’s the best thing to do if your device is lost or stolen?
Is your data safely backed up?
   - Should you trust a password manager?
   - What are the advantages of using Touch ID on iPhones?
   - Is it a good idea to use mobile payment systems in retail stores?
   - Can criminals hold your data captive and ask for ransom?
   - How can you make theft of your identity less likely?
   - Is your laptop camera or microphone recording without you knowing it?
   - Are you giving away information for targeted advertising?

*PODCAST LITERACY *

*Nicole Hennig *

*Thursday, August 3 | 1 - 2 PM ET *

Helping library users find and use the best podcasts is a great service
offering for libraries. That’s because podcasts are a useful source of
information that can be accessed when text or video isn’t convenient.

Podcasts are flourishing these days, and we’ll look at how and why they are
becoming more popular while recommending the best educational, diverse, and
accessible podcasts for library users.

*ROBOTIC MAKERSPACES @ YOUR LIBRARY: FROM STACKS TO HACKS *

*Pam Panopalis *

*Thursday, August 31 | 2 - 3 PM ET *

Robotics are linked with STEAM (learning opportunities incorporating
science, technology, engineering, arts and math as interdependent
disciplines). By endeavoring to blend these subjects, STEAM education seeks
to create 21st century leaning opportunities and skills development for all
students. However, STEAM learning goes beyond preparing students for 21st
century jobs, but rather develops a set of innovate “soft skills”
(reasoning, teamwork, and investigative abilities) that students can
incorporate in all areas of their lives. Our team would like to incorporate
robotics using two approaches. The first, as an after school program
designed as a makerspace in our library; the second, as a unit incorporated
in the either the science, math, art, or construction curriculum involving
both the mainstream and life skills sectors.
