Hello everyone,

I am reaching out to you from North Battleford, Saskatchewan regarding
recent provincial budget cutbacks that amounts to roughly a 60% reduction
in provincial funding. As a rural services librarian I find this trend
deeply concerning and I was disappointed to hear the comments from our
Education Minister Don Morgan who stated that "as a province we should be
getting out of bricks and mortar libraries and people should be focusing on
electronic or alternate media"

"A library may not be a place that should be used as a sanctuary. It should
be there as a reading or research tool, and if people are needing a
sanctuary, maybe there are other locations other than where we’re paying."

I strongly disagree with these statements as many of our communities have
no public community oriented space to speak of and our libraries offer a
wide variety of much needed services and programs year round. This service
is essential to our small rural towns and I fear the implications of this
reduction in funding.
