October is Canadian Library Month! During this month, libraries and library partners across Canada raise awareness of the valuable role libraries play in Canadians’ lives. Today, libraries are more than a place to go to borrow books. They are a vital part of the communities they serve, giving everyone an opportunity to learn, explore new ideas, and grow. Canadians rely on their public libraries for access to all kinds of information, including books, eBooks, video, and internet. They showcase the arts and provide a gathering space for our diverse local communities. School and academic libraries ensure that every student has equitable access to education and an opportunity to learn, and help researchers build a better tomorrow. CFLA-FCAB is a proud supporter of this tradition and we would like to encourage you to take time this month to help communicate the importance of libraries to all of us. We encourage you to visit our site at cfla-fcab.ca to download more graphics and materials you can use to spread the word. We would like to thank the Ontario Library Association for their support in creating these materials. Please visit cfla-fcab.ca to download supporting materials for Canadian Library Month and to learn more about the Federation’s activities in the month of September, including the adoption of CLA Guidelines and position statements and updates on CFLA-FCAB committees, priority intake forms, international representation of our library communities, and the status of former CLA Networks. |

Please Consider Joining the Federation!CFLA-FCAB has been busy up until now with some of the more mechanical aspects of forming an association of associations: drafting by-laws; completing papers for incorporation as a not-for-profit; developing a contract and hiring a Senior Project Executive; identifying gaps for library advocacy in Canada; consulting with the founding member associations, non-members, ALA, and international associations such as IFLA to determine national obligations; developing communication channels via the website and social networking; and liaising with former members of CLA and other Canadian associations regarding the continuation of initiatives previously led by CLA. Now we are embarking on the most important phase of development, reaching out to all library associations in Canada with invitations to join the Federation. Membership is open to any library association in Canada, and membership fees are designed to ensure there is no financial barrier to membership. An individual may be represented with the Federation through their provincial or regional library association, and they may also be represented by a national association specific to a particular type of library. There are many national issues for which the Federation intends to provide leadership, advocacy, and vision, and many perspectives to include. Membership of as many Canadian library associations as possible will broaden the perspective the Federation communicates to policy makers and strengthen our voice.
