News from CLA

Update and Request from the President

Dear Colleagues,

I wanted to send a quick update on our activities, following up on Executive Director Valoree (Val) McKay's more detailed update of two weeks ago. As well, I have a request.

The Request

First, the request. We are nearing the final national CLA Conference: the 2016 CLA Forum. We are really heartened by the registration we are seeing and are hoping that more CLA members and non-members might register between now and the start. We need you there to help make this event a success.

This is an important event for the Canadian library community for three reasons:

  *   The sessions are more than just sessions. They are opportunities to discuss critical policy issues impacting libraries. Arising from these dialogues will be a report to the new Federation that highlights the issues, concerns, and areas the library community sees important to address. This is a forum that could/will lay the seed for future national focus.

  *   This really is the last public moment for CLA. For anyone who has benefitted from or participated in CLA over the past decades, this is the chance to come together and celebrate what this extraordinary association has created and laid the foundation for in Canada for all libraries and library workers. We hope to see this moment as one that will be remarkable in terms of Canadian library history.

  *   This event will see the first public session of the new Federation. They will be holding a town hall at the Forum and it will be a great chance to meet the amazing leaders who will take our communities' national voice to the next level.
So - please! - consider joining us for this milestone event. You will not regret it.

The Update

As I noted above, two weeks ago Val sent out a rather detailed update on the issues we are working through as we work to wind up CLA. As you can imagine, there are many big issues and many small details.

We are on track for winding up CLA by July. Between now and then, there is a lot of work to undertake and outstanding issues to address. Val will continue to send out item updates to help highlight what has been resolved in these last few months.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email us. It might take us a few days to get back to you given everything that is going on, but we will.

I'd also like to sincerely thank the many community members that have worked with us with patience and graciousness as we try to tie up loose ends and resolve outstanding items. Your patience, good will, and faith in our good intentions is very appreciated.

I would like to thank Christina Hwang, CLA Board member, for taking the lead on conference planning for us this year. We would not have such an extraordinary event in the works were it not for her hours (and hours and hours) of volunteer efforts, of course combined with the experience and hard work of our small staff team. But without her, we would not be able to send CLA off with such an important event.

Finally, I would like to reiterate my thanks (from my letter after the Special General Meeting) to the staff at CLA Office. Their integrity and professionalism throughout this process has been both outstanding and inspiring. I can't express enough my gratitude for them and their leadership through this time. Thank you all so much.

CFLA-FCAB board approves taking over the role of co-publisher of RDA

We are delighted to be able to share with you that the CFLA-FCAB board has approved taking over the role of co-publisher of RDA from the CLA.

We have connected the Co-Publishers with the Executive of the CFLA-FCAB so that they can begin their discussions and move forward with the necessary steps to end the agreement with CLA and add the CFLA-FCAB as a co-publisher.  The CFLA-FCAB will share more information on how this is progressing as soon as they are able to.

This is such an important standard and CLA is delighted that it has a new home and Canada will continue to be at the table.

2016 Funding Announcement Additional YCW internships for the library community

Last week, Minister Joly announced new funding for the internship stream of the Young Canada Works (YCW) program to help prepare the next generation of Canadians working in the heritage sector. Recent young graduates, from across the heritage sector, will have access to 125 new internships, thus tripling the number currently offered in the heritage sector in Canada.

A call for additional 2016-2017 internship applications will be made shortly, once the number of new internships available specifically to libraries operating in English has been confirmed.  We will distribute additional information as soon as it becomes available.

Although the Canadian Council of Archives, in cooperation with CLA, is currently administering this program, adjudication of applications for the library community internships will be done by library community members only. [news]CLA announces that distribution of ALA Editions is moving to another Canadian distributor

(Ottawa. May 12, 2016)
For many years the Canadian Library Association (CLA) has provided the library community access to the American Library Association (ALA) Editions. These books are an important resource for learning and developing our communities. As a result of CLA's pending dissolution, it will no longer be administering this program however we are delighted to share with you that negotiations are being finalized with a new Canadian distributor and an announcement will be made imminently.

CLA has been working with the new distributor to ensure that existing customer needs are met. All existing backorders of ALA Editions titles will be transferred to the new distributor.

1. Release of the latest Government of Canada Survey of Heritage Institutions 2015 report

Canadian Heritage is pleased to announce the release of the latest Government of Canada Survey of Heritage Institutions (GCSHI) 2015 report, which collected financial and operating information on not-for-profit heritage institutions, including museums, art galleries, archives, historic sites, zoos and botanical gardens for the 2013 data year.

2. House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade is conducting a study on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)

As you likely know, the House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade is conducting a study on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) to assess the extent to which the agreement would be in the best interests of Canadians. As part of the study, the Committee is inviting individuals and organizations to provide written submissions and to appear as witnesses before the committee.  The study will result in a report to be presented in the House of Commons.

The Committee expects to hold hearings across Canada over the coming months and will provide further information once dates and locations are known.  Those who wish to appear before the Committee as a witness can make their request by providing their name and contact information to the Clerk of the Committee at: [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. Those wishing to submit a written statement must do so before 23:59 EDT on April 30, 2016. The Committee has provided a guide on submitting written briefs. 82nd IFLA General Conference and Assembly

Satellite Meeting

Resource Description and Access (RDA)<>, the replacement for AACR, has been the standard in many institutions for several years now.  The intention is for RDA to serve widely as an international descriptive standard. This day-long event will include presentations by invited and self-nominated speakers as well as small workshops on specific topics.

Among the issues to be addressed by presenters at this event are:

  *   What impact does this international vision have on the governance structure of RDA?
  *   How has RDA been received outside Anglophone communities?
  *   FRBR- Library Reference Model and RDA?
  *   How does RDA reach out to other communities?
  *   How does RDA treat specific areas such as serials and continuing resources, music, and audiovisual materials?

New Report Demonstrates the Economic Importance of Arts and Culture in Ontario

Statistics Canada's release today of the Provincial and Territorial Culture Indicators, 2010 to 2014 report is providing insight into the economic importance of arts and culture in Ontario and across Canada. The report shows that Ontario was responsible for 45% of the total GDP of Canada's arts, culture and heritage sector and 43% of Canadian culture sector jobs.

Between 2010 and 2014, the GDP of Ontario's arts, culture and heritage sector increased by 16.4%. This compares to a 14.7% increase in the economy overall. Jobs in the sector increased by 4.5% during the same period - compared to 5.0% in the economy overall. To read the full report, please click here<>.

We would also like to share with the community that the CFLA-FCAB and CLA are working towards a transition of English Canadian representation and Section representation at IFLA from CLA to the CFLA-FCAB and we hope to be able to be able to provide further details in the near future.  The CFLA-FCAB board of directors has recently passed a motion to take over the Co-Publisher role on RDA from CLA.  Work is underway with ALA, CILIP, and CLA (current co-publishers) to make this decision formal and to ensure a smooth transition.

We will continue to keep you apprised of progress and decisions as we are able.

#DigiCanCon - We want to hear from you and your networks

On April 23, 2016, the Department of Canadian Heritage launched the first phase of a consultation process on Canadian Content in a Digital World.

This pre-consultation phase is designed to get feedback on issues of importance to Canadians surrounding the creation, discovery and export of Canadian content in a digital world. As a key member of the Canadian cultural sector, we are asking you to provide your input by completing the pre-consultation questionnaire. Your feedback will help shape the next steps of the consultation process.

In the next phase of the consultations, the Minister of Canadian Heritage will lead an open conversation during which you will have an opportunity to provide more substantial input.

We are also asking for help to get the word out:

Short list Announced for the 2015 Danuta Gleed Literary Award

The Writers' Union of Canada is pleased to announce the short list of nominees for the nineteenth annual DANUTA GLEED LITERARY AWARD. The Award recognizes the best first collection of short fiction by a Canadian author published in 2015 in the English language. The Award consists of cash prizes for the three best first collections, with a first prize of $10,000 and two additional prizes of $500.

The jury this year comprised authors Shauna Singh Baldwin, Barry Dempster, and Dora Dueck, who determined the short list from 25 collections submitted, some by seasoned writers, and others by authors being published for the first time. Those finalists are:

CILIP Conference - 12-13 July, Brighton UK

The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals will be hosting their annual conference on 12-13 July at the iconic Brighton Dome - a Grade I listed multi-arts venue - originally built as a stable block for the Prince Regent's horses! Brighton is approximately an hour south of London by train.

The Conference will be centred around three main themes: Managing Information, Using Technology and Everyday Innovation, and will bring together hundreds of library and information professionals to share experiences and offer practical advice. The speaker programme, with 31 breakout sessions across the two days, is designed to deliver real insights that you can apply in your own work, whichever part of the sector you work in and whatever your level of experience so that you can return to your organisation feeling inspired, connected and full of practical advice and ideas for the future.

There will be talks on subjects as varied as copyright, data stewardship, information literacy, public sector partnerships, information governance, privacy, social media, user engagement plus many many more. Organisations represented include Carnegie UK Trust, Morgan Stanley, Bodleian Libraries, Tinder Foundation, Royal Shakespeare Company and Ministry of Defence.
