Globalink Research Internship at Novel Tech Ethics:
As part of the Globalink Research Internship program, applications are invited for an internship at Novel Tech Ethics<http://www.dal.ca/sites/noveltechethics.html> in the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada. The student will participate on a research project entitled "Altruism and Selfishness: Patient Motivations to Participate in Ebola and Influenza Vaccine Trials."
Using surveys with healthy participants in Phase I vaccine clinical trials, the research project aims to identify what factors motivate participation in vaccine clinical trials, and their relative importance for trial participants. By comparing the motivations of participants in an Ebola vaccine trial and an influenza vaccine trial, this study will provide useful information about whether participant motivation is influenced by the nature of the particular public health issue that the vaccine addresses.

The student is expected to have an interest in bioethics, and empirical research and its application in the social sciences and the humanities. He/she will be involved in collecting and compiling the results from survey research with vaccine trial participants and completing a review of the relevant, international literature on (a) volunteer participation in clinical trials (b) the historical development of vaccinology. He/she will be highly proficient in searching library and publication databases. Excellent communication and writing skills are necessary. Experience with survey research is desirable. He/she will have an opportunity to write papers, online commentary (blog), and give presentations on their research.

The student will be an active member of the grant team, as well as a member of the Novel Tech Ethics (NTE) research team, an interdisciplinary group of trainees and faculty members led by Baylis, housed in the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University. The student will work under the direction of Baylis and a postdoctoral research fellow assigned to the grant project. The student will be provided office space and a computer in the Novel Tech Ethics house, and he/she will have internet and email access.
