This series of four one-hour sessions is suitable for information professionals working in any setting. Content will be presented at an advanced beginner level, illustrated with examples of recent research that has contributed to our body of professional knowledge
and include selected references recommended for further reading. It will begin with an introduction and overview of research generally, and then focus on individual research methods. A special focus will be on translating workplace problems into answerable
research questions, then selecting a menu of established research methods to most effectively study the problem.
Participants will have opportunities for hands-on practice in the form of take-home exercises made available at the end of each session. Exercises will not be marked individually and will not be discussed in subsequent classes, but the instructor will provide
a completed exercise for comparison and the opportunity to ask questions and share perceptions with the instructor and other participants via a closed listserv.
Presenter:
Jackie MacDonald is a full-time health service manager with a keen interest in helping information professionals adjust to work in a changing environment. She has earned a PhD from the
University of Sheffield ISchool, a MLS from Dalhousie and a BSc (Biology, Chemistry) from Mount Saint Vincent University. Her career has included work in the academic sector (Acadia, Dalhousie, and University of Saskatchewan), the private sector and the health
sector in a large university teaching hospital, a regional hospital with a nursing school, and a multi-site health board.

Anyone who works with teens knows that program attendance can be hit or miss. During this session, we will look at ways to engage and involve teens through a variety of self-directed programs,
which allow teens to interact with library resources and staff on their own terms.
Presenters:
Faith Roebuck Shergold is the Coordinator of Community Engagement and Young Adult Services at the
Whitchurch-Stouffville Public Library. She has been WSPL's first dedicated teen librarian for two years, and knows the challenges and joys of working with young adults on limited resources.
Emily Smith is the Teen Services Librarian for the Whitby Public Library, where she has spent the past three years discovering what the teens in her community love and hate. She still can’t
believe that she gets paid to plan fun programs and talk about her favourite books.
