As the specialty of expert searcher continues to evolve, it is useful to look at some of the seminal work and traditional approaches that together contribute to best practices for searching. Key benefits: To answer common searcher questions such as "how do I know when to stop" To review some of the terms that contribute to a common search language To suggest one model for structuring search services To review the work of Marcia Bates and others as a foundation for development of expert search skills. Presenter: Jackie MacDonald is a full-time health services manager who has been searching and thinking about search methods for over thirty years. She has worked in rural Nova Scotia since 1995. She holds a PhD in health informatics from University of Sheffield and adjunct faculty appointments in Dalhousie’s Faculty of Management, School of Information Management (SIM), and Faculty of Medicine, Medical Informatics. They started a program called Cyber-Seniors and recruited students from their high school to offer computer tutorials at a local seniors home. Cyber-Seniors has since inspired a documentary film and a North America-wide social impact campaign. Through entertaining clips, meet the pioneering group of cyber-seniors and witness their journey as they discover the World Wide Web with the help of their teenage mentors. Workshop outcomes: - Be inspired through film clips and stories from the Cyber-Seniors pilot program - Gain tools (via Cyber-Seniors Training Manual & Handbook) to implement the program in your organization/community - Participate in a Q&A with the film's director and one of the program founders - Join the Cyber-Seniors movement, with access to other partners and organizations working with youth and seniors Presenters: When Kascha Cassaday was in high school she started the Cyber-Senior Program, inspired by her grandparents learning to use the internet. She is currently studying Journalism at Ryerson University and hopes to continue to pursue a career in media and broadcast journalism. Saffron Cassaday is an actress/filmmaker born and raised in Toronto. When her younger sisters started the Cyber-Seniors program, Saffron decided to make a documentary film on the subject.
