Library Cataloguing/Reference Assistant

(Full-time NSGEU Position – 35 hrs per week)

Duties:  The Mount Library is seeking a reliable, flexible, knowledgeable, technical, motivated, organized, and mature person to be the Library Cataloguing/Reference Assistant.  This position currently reports to the Librarian for Collections and works with the Librarians for Systems, Reference & Instruction, and Archives & Scholarly Communications and with the Manager of Access Services.  The primary responsibilities of this position include cataloguing and classifying materials in all formats, adding to and maintaining the Mount’s Library resource records within Novanet’s integrated library system.  The position is currently an important member of the Library’s Reference Team, and a portion of the position includes time devoted to scheduled reference in person, by phone, email or LiveHelp (instant messaging).  Duties also include assisting the Systems Librarian with front-line Library IT support, for example troubleshooting workstations and installing software.  The successful candidate will also assist the Archives & Scholarly Communications Librarian on projects which could include, but are not limited to, processing archival material, digitization and metadata entry for digital collections, and other assistance as required.  The Cataloguing Assistant participates as a member on Novanet committees or in Novanet initiatives as required.


Qualifications:  The position requires at least three years previous work experience in a library.  The candidate will have an undergraduate degree, and preference will be given to candidates who have a Library Technician’s Diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience (preferably in an academic environment).  Candidates must be (a) self-motivated and work conscientiously without supervision, (b) have superior technical skills and an interest in and aptitude for technology, (c) have excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, (d) be detail oriented and (e) have the adaptability to easily change activities in the workplace.  Experience with an automated integrated library system is also required.  Supervisory and training experience will be considered an asset.  The candidate should have knowledge and experience with current cataloguing practices in all formats and be fluent in MARC, AACR2, and LC standards.  Knowledge of RDA, archival description (e.g. RAD), metadata standards (e.g. Dublin Core), digital collections and institutional repositories will be considered assets.


Classification:  NSGEU – Level 7
Salary Range:  $39,724 - $47,433 per annum
Start Date:  June 10, 2013
