Subject: [APLA] Professional Mentorship Program - Invitation to Participate
Posted on behalf of the CLA Student Chapter.
I have participated in this program since its inception and it has been a wonderful opportunity to meet the new professionals coming into our field, have great conversation and also learn a lot about the exciting new things happening at
SIM.
For the past ten years, the Professional Mentorship Program (PMP) has provided an opportunity for library practitioners and information managers from a variety of organizations to share their experiences with
students enrolled in the Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) program. Since its inception, there have been over 350 partnerships made in which students have gained valuable insights into the working life of practicing librarians, archivists and
information professionals.
Each participating professional is matched with an MLIS student for the duration of the academic year. The program is very flexible, with each pair determining the nature of the partnership. In previous years activities have included resume and job searching
advice, meeting for coffee, tours of libraries and workplaces, and attending meetings and workshops together. There will be an opening reception on October 25th to start the program and give partners an opportunity to meet, as well as a wrap up event at the
end of the winter term.
Spending time with students is a rewarding experience. It is always useful to keep in touch with what new librarians and information managers are thinking and learning, and to see the attitudes and interests they will be bringing to the workplace.
If you are interested in participating in the 2012-2013 Professional Mentorship Program, please complete the attached participation form and return it to the Dalhousie CLA Student Chapter by
October 5, 2012. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact the CLA Student Chapter at
