Hi All, If we look at what is happening in terms of government libraries we need to ask ourselves some hard questions, we have seen CISTI disbanded, the Canadian Agriculture Library has just been cut by almost 30%, our provincial school libraries have been slashed, public libraries closed - some of the responsibility lies with us as Librarians. Why does government not know what we do? How can we change it? A recent report by the Education Advisory Council, US, entitled "Redefining the Academic Library: Managing the Migration to Digital Information Services" provides a lot of lessons and suggestions for all Libraries and Librarians. We know we are relevant, we know we are innovative, we know that we are essential to best practice - how do we ensure government gets it! I believe we need a change a groundswell in terms of how we market what we do a change that reflects today and future trends. It is not my intent to disparage economists* but calling an economist a librarian for convenience is wishy-washy. There is a problem here, perhaps it is with terminology, perhaps with our own scope of practice and what we agree are the requirements for it. Whatever it is, we should get it sorted out. I wonder, is this similar to nutritionist and registered dietician - I think I could hang out a shingle to become a nutritionist this afternoon if I wanted to, but I believe I'd be required to successfully complete a course of study and an internship, prove competency and maintain registration (or licensure) to call myself a Registered Dietician. At the risk of sounding incredibly naïve on the duties and matters of the Parliamentary Librarian - because I am, but asking this in the spirit of wanting some context - should I not be concerned that this person does not, in fact, hold the credentials to be a librarian? Particularly if she is providing leadership (or should be) to Library and Research Services to those who have the potential to influence policy makers at the highest level? The Chief Medical Officer of Canada would never, ever be anyone but a physician. The CMA would have a fit, and rightly so. "Ms. L'Heureux has been an integral member of the Library's management team since 2008 and has demonstrated the ability to lead the Library with vision and innovation", said the Prime Minister. "I am pleased that she has agreed to be nominated for this position." The Prime Minister took the opportunity to thank Mr. William Young - who served as Parliamentary Librarian from December 12, 2005, until December 11, 2011 - for his dedication, diligence and sound leadership during his tenure, and to wish him well in his future endeavours. Holding a special place in Canadian history, the Library of Parliament is the last remaining part of the original Parliament building. It is a fully functioning library whose collection and services support the activities and decisions of Parliament. The control and management of the Library rests with the Parliamentary Librarian, who is appointed by the Governor in Council. Pursuant to Standing Order 111.1, the Leader of the Government in the House of Commons will be tabling this nomination for referral to the Standing Joint Committee on the Library of Parliament. Ms. L'Heureux joined the Library of Parliament in 2008 as Assistant Parliamentary Librarian. Since February 2012, she has held the position of Associate Parliamentary Librarian and has been performing the duties and functions of Parliamentary Librarian since that time. She is also a member of the Standing Committee on the Library and Research Services for Parliament section of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions. Prior to joining the Library of Parliament, she held the positions of Director General of Reorganization Implementation and Renewal Integration at Human Resources and Social Development Canada and Specialist Advisor, Tax Policy, at the Australian Treasury. She has also worked as a policy analyst at Finance Canada, Environment Canada and Energy, Mines and Resources Canada.
