Good morning, and I apologize for the cross postings!

 

I have just recently come across ResearchGate and Academia.edu . I’m trying to get my head around open access, research sharing (which may or may not be open access) and just what is out there. While I do literature searching for a good part of my day, I’m not in an academic setting nor support researchers in this fashion, so these communities are new to me. However, I do work with people in my organizations who are information gatekeepers/brokers for their departments, and they might want to be plugged into these resources as well (and possibly contribute to them).

 

Is there any good soul out there who can provide an overview of these sorts of online research communities, or point me to one? I am just trying to figure out where they fit in the landscape of my job and our information services.
