Dear APLA Members:

Please find attached, for information, a letter from CNIB’s President and CEO Jon Rafferty regarding plans to provide equitable library services to Canadians with print disabilities.  This is CNIB’s response to Library and Archives Canada’s announcement that “their responsibility for the Initiative for Equitable Library Access (IELA) is complete.”   In the absence of continued leadership from our national library, the CNIB is proposing a way forward.  The letter describes the steps and gives a timeline for implementation of a “Hub” model for delivery of these essential services.  CNIB is clearly looking for support and partnerships with the public library sector.

Mr Rafferty’s letter was discussed at the September meeting of the APLA Executive and it was decided that I would respond in support (moral rather than concrete).  I expect that many of your libraries will also have been contacted.  This message is intended to ensure general awareness.

It would be useful to know what actions are being taken around the region with regard to this development.  Please share!

Jocelyne
