Promoting Teen Books to Adult Readers with Lindy Pratch

We are currently enjoying a golden age of YA fiction, yet adults who have enjoyed YA bestsellers like Twilight and The Hunger Games may remain unaware of the richness and diversity within the YA realm. Some of today’s best literature is being written for teens. What is the appeal of these books and how can we get more of them into the hands of adult readers? How does the teen genre differ from the classic adult bildungsroman? This session will also discuss crossovers like The Book Thief – novels that publishers have promoted with dual adult and teen editions – as they are a good entry point for adults unfamiliar with YA. Teen materials in various formats add vibrancy to the whole-collection approach to readers’ services. Booktalks throughout the session will introduce exciting possibilities; sometimes the perfect match for an adult reader is a teen book.

About the Presenter...
Lindy Pratch – Library Assistant specializing in teen services at Edmonton Public Library (EPL).
Since 2001, Lindy has facilitated a wide variety of readers’ services training for staff at EPL. She has also presented at numerous conferences, including “No Ephebiphobia Here” (with Wendy Gronnestad-Damur, ALC 2005 & OLA Super Conference 2006); “Bienvenue aux Ados” (Montreal 2007); “Verse Novels for Teens” (ALC 2008); and “Aboriginal Books for Teens” (Dreamcatcher Aboriginal Youth Conference 2007 & ALC 2010).
