Western Counties Regional Library seeks a Regional Library
Director/CEO for its 10 branch public library system in South Western
Nova Scotia.
The library
Western Counties Regional Library serves 61,000 residents of Digby,
Shelburne and Yarmouth Counties in Nova Scotia through its 10 branch
libraries and Library Express mail service. The library has an operating
budget of $1.7 million and has a staff of 57 (35 FTE). The library
provides service in English and also in French to the area’s Acadian

The system is based in Yarmouth, a dynamic seaside town which acts as
the regional service centre for South Western Nova Scotia. Yarmouth

The position
The Regional Library Director, reporting to a 16-member Board of
Trustees, is responsible for planning and directing the overall operations
and management of the region. Duties include:
- Personnel administration in a unionized environment
- Policy development
- Budget planning and financial control
- Fundraising
- Strategic planning
- Development of partnerships with governments and
community organizations
- Staff mentoring and development
Qualifications
-A Masters degree in library science from an ALA-accredited
program
-A minimum of several years of progressively responsible experience
in public libraries, with at least four years experience in an
administrative position
-Strong verbal and written communications skills
-Ability to speak, read and write English and French an asset
-Experience working in a union environment an asset
The ideal candidate will be an energetic and enthusiastic individual
with the skills to provide strategic vision and leadership for the
library. He/she will have:
-demonstrated commitment to rural living
-willingness to participate broadly in the life of the region’s
communities.
-proven abilities in personnel and financial management
-demonstrated skill at building partnerships and collaborating
with other organizations, articulating and promoting the
library’s mission, mentoring and empowering staff and
developing programs
-thorough knowledge of current trends, technology and “best
practices” for public libraries
Compensation
Salary will be dependent upon qualifications and experience and will be
negotiated at the time of hiring. Generous benefits package.
