Director of Library Services

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to lead a respected and cherished institution that provides library services to a population of over 60,000 citizens?  The St. Albert Public Library Board is seeking an experienced, senior-level professional to lead our library into the future.  The Director of Library Services will provide overall leadership and direct all operations of the Library to ensure a high level of service that meets the community's needs.  The Director will take a leadership role in developing the Library's strategic plan and will be accountable for financial management of the Library's $3.6 million annual budget.  The Director will be responsible for all human resource management within the organization, which has over 50 staff (32 FTEs), and will provide leadership to managers and their professional staff through supervision and support to achieve annual goals.  Additionally, the Director will be required to build relationships and maintain partnerships with City Administration, the provincial Library Services Branch, other libraries, library organizations and community groups.

The City of St. Albert, a suburban community located at the northern boundary of the City of Edmonton, celebrates a rich history that dates back almost 150 years.  Founded in 1861 by Father Albert Lacombe, St. Albert is the oldest, non-fortified community in Alberta.  The St. Albert Public Library is a vital part of the community and has consistently rated in the City's annual Community Surveys as one of the six key strengths of the City.  About 300,000 people pass through our doors each year and another quarter million visit our website annually.  Library users borrowed over 850,000 books, magazines, and audio-visual materials last year alone. The majority of St. Albertans are library users and all demographics are served.  In the next 20 years, the population of St. Albert is expected to surpass 100,000 residents and the St. Albert Public Library will need to adapt and grow to meet that increased population.  The Library currently operates from a 25,000 square-foot facility but the Library Board is working toward the goal of a new library of 60,000 square-feet.

The next Director of Library Services for the St. Albert Public Library will possess:

 *   a Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited school, plus 8-10 years of professional library experience
 *   Extensive experience in budget preparation & financial management and proven success in managing a significant operating budget
 *   Demonstrated ability to plan, implement and manage organizational change and growth
 *   Strong project management and time management skills to deal with conflicting deadlines and competing priorities
 *   Broad knowledge of library principles and emerging trends within library services
 *   Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with proven experience in developing relationships and supporting a collaborative environment
 *   Superior organizational and problem-solving skills

Current Salary Range: $98,989 to $120,432 (under review) plus a comprehensive benefit plan
