New Book Honours Canadian Victoria Cross Winner

Retired naval pilot Donald J. Neilly, has recently completed a biography of Victoria Cross winner Flight Lieutenant David Ernest Hornell, VC, RCAF of Mimico, Ontario. Mr. Neilly, a Shearwater Aviation Museum volunteer, has spent years on a personal mission to correct previous misinformation and bring new elements to light about the fateful night in 1944 leading to Hornell being awarded the highest award for valour in the Commonwealth during World War Two. This new book, entitled “Hornell V.C. David Ernest, 1910-1944: A Biography”, will be launched on the 4th of November 2009 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm, in a reception being held at the Shearwater Aviation Museum.

Mr. Neilly said about his book “After 65 years of passive neglect, the museum has taken up the cause to champion his memory.”  Mr. Neilly was also born in Toronto, raised and educated in the same hometown as Hornell, now part of Etobicoke, Ontario, and knew family and friends of the Victoria Cross winner, having met Hornell while attending Sunday school and church services where Hornell was a teacher and Superintendant.  Having flown the same Consolidated Canso aircraft in his civil aviation career as Hornell had flown during World War Two, and having flown military aircraft during the Cold War, Don felt uniquely qualified to collect and compile this biography to honour a true Canadian wartime hero.

The new Hornell biography will be available at the Shearwater Aviation Museum shop, in time for Remembrance Day.

The Shearwater Aviation Museum is a Canadian Forces Museum located at 12 Wing Shearwater, adjacent to Eastern Passage, who collects and exhibits portraying Canada’s Maritime Military Aviation heritage, with a specialty in presenting Canada’s little-known Naval Air history.  This book launch will be one of several Centennial of Flight events being held by the museum in 2009.
