How to Read a Review from a Readers' Advisory Perspective

with Joyce Saricks - 1 hour Audio Conference

The Education Institute is very pleased to welcome Joyce Saricks, a
well-known authority in the field, to the Pan Canadian Readers' Advisory
Series.

Since none of us has time to read all the books readers ask about in our
libraries, this session will focus on using book reviews for fiction and
non-fiction as a vital resource for readers' advisors and an easy way to
expand what we know about the books our readers want to read. It will
explore strategies for reading reviews--in library journals and popular
media--from the perspective of a readers' advisor, looking for words
that indicate the book's appeal, its potential audience, and possible
read-alike authors.

Joyce Saricks developed and directed the readers' advisory department at
the Downers Grove Public Library in Illinois from 1983-2004. She has
written two books on readers' advisory--Readers' Advisory Service in the
Public Library (3rd edition, 2005) and Readers' Advisory Guide to Genre
Fiction (2nd edition, 2009), both published by ALA Editions. Saricks
currently serves as NoveList's Readalike coordinator, as well as
columnist and audio reviewer for Booklist. In her spare time, she
teaches Readers' Advisory at Dominican University Graduate School of
Library Science.

8-2313-3292>
with Faye MacDougall - 1 hour Audio Conference

Your library staff may be exposed to unsafe situations in your
workplace. Learn more about intentionally planning for the safety of
staff members working in small to mid-size public library branches. An
overview of potential safety concerns for staff members and library
users will be presented by someone who has been involved in this type of
planning at the local building level and as part of regional planning.
Practical tips and suggestions for addressing potential risks will be
discussed.

Faye MacDougall, is Regional Librarian at the Cape Breton Regional
Library and is a member of the Region's Occupational Health and Safety
Committee. She has worked towards raising awareness of and reducing
safety hazards for Library staff members, often by using inexpensive and
practical solutions.
