Professional Librarian Vacancy

Cataloguing and Metadata Librarian

Patrick Power Library

Saint Mary’s University

The Patrick Power Library seeks an energetic and innovative librarian to lead our cataloguing programs into the future. We require an individual with a mastery of traditional cataloguing standards and practices for the everyday work of original and copy cataloguing, and one who is also excited about working with others to explore and develop new ways to approach the description, organization of, and access to information resources.  The successful applicant will report to the University Librarian within a collegial working environment.

The Librarian is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Cataloguing and Metadata Services Department, including the cataloguing and classification of library materials and the final preparation of materials added to the library collection. The Librarian participates in the hiring, training, and evaluation of department staff and student assistants; determines work assignments for cataloguing staff; supervises procedures to ensure appropriate records are added into the Integrated Library System (Aleph); manages authority control; establishes procedures and recommends policy on all matters pertaining to the Cataloguing and Metadata Services Department. The Librarian represents the Library at Novanet on cataloguing related issues.

The Librarian is expected to take a leadership and training role in the investigation and implementation of changing cataloguing standards and procedures, including the introduction of RDA (Resource Description and Access), FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records), and emerging metadata schemas used to make electronic and other resources accessible, and to support the Library’s institutional objectives.

In addition to overseeing the operations of Cataloguing and Metadata Services, the Librarian will maintain Collection Development Liaison responsibilities for two to three academic departments, provide Reference and Research services, and participate in the Library’s Information Literacy program.

The Librarian must have a Master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited institution as well as extensive knowledge of and experience with various phases of cataloguing activities including OCLC, Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (latest edition), Library of Congress Classification System, authority control, and online catalogs.  Experience in an academic library as well as with the Aleph Integrated Library System would be an asset.
