The Standing Committee on
Research is pleased to invite you to the 2008 Memorial University Libraries
Research Fair which will focus on quantitative data sources and basic
statistics. The event will take place from 11am-2pm on Thursday, November 27th
in A2029, the Board of Regents Boardroom. The committee extends
a big thank you to the speakers for participating in the event. If you plan to

“Getting to the Source: a Survey of Quantitative Data Sources Available to
the Everyday Librarian” by Lisa Goddard
This session will provide a survey of data sources that are available to MUN
librarians who wish to engage in statistical analysis of collections and
services. These include logs, reports, and data sources from web servers, proxy
servers, resource vendors, link resolvers, federated search engines,
institutional repositories, electronic reference services, and the integrated
library system.

“Demystifying Stats: a Primer on Basic Statistics” by Gillian Byrne
This session aims to demystify basic statistics, covering topics such as
variables, hypotheses, sampling, statistical significance, as well as basic
statistical calculations like cross-tabulations, chi-squares and correlation
coefficients. The emphasis of this session is on participants learning
how to evaluate statistics produced by libraries, both published and
operational - there is NO math component in this session (but there might be
homework).
