FYI, for anyone near St. John's who is on the APLA list but not on the NLLA list. Please RSVP by this Monday. -- The Standing Committee on Research is pleased to invite you to the 2008 Memorial University Libraries Research Fair which will focus on quantitative data sources and basic statistics. The event will take place from 11am-2pm on Thursday, November 27th in A2029, the Board of Regents Boardroom. The committee extends a big thank you to the speakers for participating in the event. If you plan to attend both, or one of the sessions, please RSVP by Friday, November 21st. Full details are below. 11-12:20 "Getting to the Source: a Survey of Quantitative Data Sources Available to the Everyday Librarian" by Lisa Goddard This session will provide a survey of data sources that are available to MUN librarians who wish to engage in statistical analysis of collections and services. These include logs, reports, and data sources from web servers, proxy servers, resource vendors, link resolvers, federated search engines, institutional repositories, electronic reference services, and the integrated library system. 12:20-12:40 Coffee Break 12:40-2:00 "Demystifying Stats: a Primer on Basic Statistics" by Gillian Byrne This session aims to demystify basic statistics, covering topics such as variables, hypotheses, sampling, statistical significance, as well as basic statistical calculations like cross-tabulations, chi-squares and correlation coefficients. The emphasis of this session is on participants learning how to evaluate statistics produced by libraries, both published and operational - there is NO math component in this session (but there might be homework). -- Wendy Rodgers Humanities Liaison Librarian Queen Elizabeth II Library Memorial University of Newfoundland St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada A1B 3Y1 Tel: (709) 737-4439 Fax: (709) 737-2153
