Job Opening

Deputy Chief Librarian

 

The Cumberland Regional Library headquartered in Amherst, Nova Scotia has an opening for a Deputy Chief Librarian.  Amherst is located on the Nova Scotia / New Brunswick border and is two hours from Halifax and 35 minutes from Moncton.  The Cumberland Regional Library is one of nine public library systems in Nova Scotia and serves a population of 32,605 through seven branch libraries and books by mail service.

 

Under the supervision of the Chief Librarian, the Deputy Librarian provides support to the Chief in managing and supervising staff, planning budgets, collection development, publicity, and coordinates the technical services department for the Cumberland Regional Library.

 

Requirements:

           MLIS degree from an accredited Library School

           Minimum of 3 years library experience

           Experience in project management

           Increasing supervisory experience

           Extensive computer experience in systems management and automated library systems.

           Extensive knowledge of online searching and online public access catalogs.

 

Supervision    

           Oversees the day-to-day operation of the technical services department

           Serves as Acting Chief Librarian in the Chiefís absence

           Assists the Chief Librarian in the management of library branches

           With Chief Librarian interviews, selects and trains new staff members

 

Technical Services & Systems Administration

           Coordinates the procedures of the technical services department including cataloguing, acquisitions, inter-library loans, book processing and mending, and collection exchange.

           Assists with technical services duties when necessary.

           Oversees the development of the Libraryís webpage

           Trains staff in new automated library procedures

           Investigates and troubleshoots problems with the catalogue and circulation system.

 

System Support

           Answers Unicorn related questions/problems from branches.  Forwards complex Unicorn issues to Provincial Library

           Documents Circulation Policy changes 

 

Reference      

           Answers subject requests

           Provides support for branch assistants

 

Circulation     

           Works assigned shifts in the Amherst branch

           Offers general reference and readerís advisory

           Keeps statistics on library use

           Responsible for opening and closing procedures according to schedule

           Ensures that library rules are maintained and order is kept in the library

           Maintenance of records and billing for lost library materials                               

           Shelves returned library materials

Collection Development       

           In consultation with Chief Librarian develops the reference collection and participates in all areas of collection development

           Reads reviews and catalogues in order to suggest appropriate materials

           Selects material of both print and non-print versions of fiction, non-fiction, magazines and audio-visual materials

           Weeds collection

 

Programming

           Conducts programs and develops publicity as required.

 

Library Representative        

           Serves on various Provincial Library committees including the Automation Working Group (AWG) and the Reference Contacts Group

           Attends library board meetings as a library representative

 

Other Duties             

           May be assigned other duties and projects as required which may supersede regular tasks.  Other duties may include but are not limited to: fund raising, programming, conference work and any other tasks or special projects assigned by the Chief Librarian.

 

Salary:

$45,325 - 51,015 annually and a benefit package.

 

Term: Permanent full time with a sixth month probationary period.

 

Start date: As soon as possible.
