Please see the following message from Friends of CHN.

=20
CANADA'S LEADING WEB-BASED SOURCE FOR HEALTH INFORMATION WILL CLOSE ON MA=
RCH 31, 2008

Facts about the Canadian Health Network (CHN):

- 20,000+ quality, peer-reviewed resources in English and French.
- In-depth information on 25 health topics and population groups electro=
nic newsletter.
- CHN is used by 395,000 people (unique users) monthly (5.4 million+ a y=
ear).
- 40% of users are health professionals, who share information withclien=
ts.
- Francophones visit CHN in higher proportions.
- 94% of users recommend the site to others.
- Third party evaluation is high and costs have been dropping.
- Entirely focused on needs of users without profit or sale motives.

The Federal Government has a surplus. Eighty per cent of the 15 million C=
anadians on-line seek health information on the internet. CHN fulfills t=
he Federal Government's commitment to individual engagement and responsib=
ility for health and supports organizations building healthy
communities.

1. Please voice your opposition by writing the Federal Government to urge=
 them to:

- Reconsider the Public Health Agency of Canada cut in grants and contri=
butions.
- Reinstate these funds to the Public Health Agency of Canada, specifica=
lly for CHN.
- Continue the CHN program.

Tell the Government how you use CHN and how valuable it is in your work, =
to your clients and to you personally (contact information is below).

2. Ask your organization, board and other organizations to write letters.

3. Join Friends of CHN ([log in to unmask]). Health librarians, nur=
ses, health promoters and others are joining forces to oppose the CHN clo=
sure. You and your networks are needed in this fight.=20

Hello all!

I am on the library committee for the Autism Society of NL and they are =
getting a brand new library at their centre (Elaine Dobbin Centre across =
from the Janeway). It will be a small collection (under 1000) and we are =
still in the processing stage - selecting software*, buying supplies, =
etc.

We need a few cataloguers to help get this collection up and running. I =
suspect the majority of the items can be copy catalogued and so far it =
looks like it will be LibrarySoft (*if you have a better suggestion =
please let me know! All suggestions welcomed even if you can't do the =
cataloguing). In return, you will be rewarded not only with that warm =
fuzzy feeling of helping but free food from the Pantry (free lunch for =
every 100 books catalogued!).

Any members out there willing to assist? Work won't start until after =
Christmas. Email me to let me know. Whether you can do 5 or 100 items it =
all helps!

Annette

Hi all:

Anyone have experience in setting up a small, volunteer-driven =
organization library? I am volunteering with the Autism Society of NL =
library and have been assigned to pick out software. The only =
small-library software I have personally used is InMagic and =
ResourceMate (will only have about 1000 items so....). Have several =
other demos en route to test. Any and all advice welcomed! Thanks.

Annette
