Chances are, you've heard these terms tossed around over the past few months, and you're probably eager to get a grasp on what it all means for your library. If so, this course is for you! This 6-week, on-line course explores ways in which libraries can use 2.0 technologies & tools to serve users, improve their Web presence, and enhance the user experience. Through a series of on-line modules and hands-on exercises, participants will be introduced to a variety of 2.0 tools and will be encouraged to develop a proposal to implement one (or more!) of these technologies at their institutions. Tuesday, Nov. 6th, 12-1pm ET (9-10am, PT) Evidence Based Librarianship: A Toolkit for Public Libraries with Virginia Wilson and Stephanie Hall- 1 hour WEB CONFERENCE They say that if you don't have time to do something right, you'd better have time to do it over. Evidence Based Librarianship (EBL) is a way to systematically examine an issue to improve decision-making and avoid costly mistakes. Virginia Wilson and Stephanie Hall will address the issues involved in utilizing EBL in a public library setting. They will present a toolkit tailored to public librarians and public library workers, with tips on how to integrate EBL into the workflow. The toolkit will include key EBL articles, sources of evidence, and steps to take to put EBL into practice. Wednesday, Nov. 7th, 3-4pm ET (12-1pm, PT) Adding the Discovery Interface to the Integrated Library System for User-Engagement and Collaborative Networking with Beth Jefferson- 1 hour WEB CONFERENCE Social Discovery Tools enabled by the Web 2.0 environment are being explored and utilized to catapult the library into the forefront of social networking. BiblioCommons is an ambitious undertaking that has been developed with the support of Knowledge Ontario and Provincial Library Services in British Columbia, following extensive end-user research through 2006, and technology development through 2007. BiblioCommons services are now in beta release. These services will, for the first time, actively integrate the contribution of social data into the existing usage patterns of library users, and enable the aggregation and sharing of that data across library systems to create a highly interactive, discovery environment which exists as a layer on top of the library?s existing Integrated Library System. Thursday, Nov. 8th, 2-3pm ET (11am-12pm, PT) Behind the Scenes of On-line Course Creation with Laura E. Briggs and James M. Skidmore- 1 hour WEB CONFERENCE What's involved in the creation of an on-line course, and how can librarians support this process? Laura Briggs and James Skidmore will take you through the educational and technical considerations that contribute to the development of classes delivered via course management systems. Laugh with Laura as she cajoles James into including information literacy modules tailored to the course topic, cry with James as he struggles to improve the thinking, research, and writing skills of his students. This gritty, behind-the-scenes look at their collaboration will provide you with an understanding of pedagogical practices and introduce you to useful tools and resources that can facilitate on-line course creation. Or, how to promote Early Literacy with Angela Reynolds- 1 hour AUDIO CONFERENCE Using the PLA/ALSC Every Child Ready to Read research can be daunting. Find out how one rural library system is taking the leap into Early Literacy promotion. How can small libraries use the information and research in the Every Child Ready to Read campaign? Drawing on examples already implemented, join children's librarian Angela Reynolds as she shows you samples and tips for promoting early literacy in your library.
