With the advent of social software and Web 2.0, users are adding metadata and using tags to organize their own digital collections, categorize the content of others and build bottom-up classification systems. This session will focus on the grassroots organizational scheme which has come to be known as a Folksonomy. What are the benefits of folksonomies as opposed to traditional classification schemes and what are the disadvantages? Where does the Folksonomy fit in the future of your library? How are libraries implementing tagging and Folksonomies today? Why do we need to be aware of this increasingly popular Web innovation?

This session explores the use of Instant Messaging to reach out to users and provides a road map for planning and launching an IM reference service at your library. Amanda will address the issues and provide strategies for dealing with those issues during every stage of the process: from planning, training, and staffing, to launching and evaluating your IM service.

These days, libraries are all about change especially technology changes! While many of us are able to steer successfully through those changes, others get stuck along the way. This change management 101 talk explains how to successfully get the library and the info pros through change. King discusses change and the transition stages people go through with change; guidelines to navigate through change, both for front-line staff and for managers; and provides recommendations on successfully transitioning staff through change.

The Blue Spruce Award is a primary reading program which brings recently published Canadian children's picture books to Ontario children ages 4 to 7 in kindergarten through to grade two. For many children, this is their first introduction to the world of books making it a very exciting time for everyone involved. The students will listen to a list of 10 nominated Canadian picture books and then vote for their favourite one. Based on student voting across the province, the winning readers choice picture book is selected and the author/illustrator is honoured with the Blue Spruce Award
Tuesday, Dec. 4, 4-5pm ET (1-2am, PT) Assignments Worth Doing -Collaborating with Faculty to Engage Students in Authentic Inquiry with Jean Donham- 1 hour AUDIO CONFERENCE
Do students ask real questions when they engage in research? What is their mental model of a research question? Is it a question for which they already have an answer? Is it a question that matters or a question that will suffice for the assignment? A critical factor to the inquiry process is designing assignments that engage students in authentic inquiry. Too often, students satisfy course requirements by only reporting what others have published. Collaborating with faculty, librarians can participate in developing research assignments that demand authentic questions and engage students in research that goes beyond reporting toward gaining new insights.

Thursday, Dec. 6, 3-4pm ET (12-1pm, PT) Answering Reference Questions About Cancer with Ruti Volk - 1 hour AUDIO CONFERENCE
This session will focus on the principles and practice of providing cancer information to the public. Starting with describing cancer and its key concepts and terminology, the information needs of people with cancer across the continuum of care will be explored, including the unique concerns of those affected by childhood cancer. The presenter will explain how to conduct an effective reference interview on cancer topics and the questions the librarian should ask in order to identify information needs. The principles of locating and selecting authoritative information sources in patient friendly language will be discussed as well.
