Monday, Oct. 15th, 4-5pm ET (1-2pm, PT) It's a Web 2.0 World! How Will This Impact Our School Library Program? with Anita Brooks-Kirkland - 1 hour AUDIO CONFERENCE
Not only is Web 2.0 transforming the world of information, it is becoming the on-line environment of comfort for our students. We are at a critical crossroad in school libraries, where we either choose to embrace and lead in the new world of information, or we choose to ignore it, not only missing out on the great opportunities it offers for student success, but in the process increasing students' life/school disconnect.
What are we going to do about it?
As a starting place, we need to learn more about the emerging environment and think about its impact on our libraries and programs. How do we need to re-think our Web site evaluation tools for an interactive Web environment populated by blogs and wikis? How can we harness the powers of the social Web to enhance students' learning experiences? How can we make the school library the hub of student success in a Web 2.0 world? Big questions, with both thought provoking and practical answers.

Wednesday, Oct. 17th, 3-4pm ET (12-1pm, PT) Library Programs On-line: Possibilities and Practicalities with Tom Peters - 1 hour WEB CONFERENCE
Web conferencing systems are being used by libraries and library-related organizations to produce and distribute a wide-variety of live on-line events, including public events (lectures, book discussions, etc.), professional development programs, workshops, and on-line meetings. Live on-line events can serve as a substitute for live in-person events, telephone conference calls, and interminable e-mail threaded discussions. Tom Peters will discuss the advantages, challenges, current realities, and potential future directions for the use of Web conferencing systems by libraries. He will explain the main features of Web conferencing systems, such as voice-over-IP, text chatting, co-browsing, whiteboarding, application sharing, and video-over-IP. He also will explore the value of recording, archiving, and podcasting live on-line events. The various Web conferencing systems and collaborative available to libraries, ranging from feature-rich and expensive systems to open source software, will be summarized.
Thursday, Oct. 18th, 1-2pm ET (10-11am, PT) Managing Virtual Library Collections with E-Metrics with Andrew White and Eric Djiva Kamal - 1 hour WEB CONFERENCE
E-metrics are not simply another way of collecting library performance measures. They offer a look at an infinite variety of dimensions that easily surpass the accuracy and value of any prior attempt at quantifying library operations. Correctly employing e-metrics can streamline, integrate, and supplement the majority of statistical-gathering efforts. The session will focus on e-metrics as a cost and collection analysis tool for digital and virtual library collections comprised of formats like abstracted and full-text e-journals, subscription index research databases, and e-books. For the technical folks who put theory into practice, we also cover the how-to procedural tasks and considerations.
