Queen’s University Library seeks a collaborative, enthusiastic, flexible
librarian to fill a replacement, non-renewable limited-term position (approximately
mid-August 2007 to April 30, 2008) in Stauffer Library’s Learning &
Research Services unit, one of the university partners in the Queen’s
Learning Commons. Reporting to the Head, Learning & Research
Services, working as a member of the reference/instruction/collection
development team and in the context of the services offered by the
Queen’s Learning Commons, the librarian provides effective, user-centred
reference services in the humanities, social sciences and business; liaises with
faculty, staff and students in assigned subject areas which include Kinesiology
and Health Studies, French, German, Spanish, Latin American Studies, and
Linguistics; develops, delivers and evaluates curriculum-integrated information
literacy programs and general instruction programs; creates reference,
instruction and promotional materials, including web pages, online tutorials
and print handouts; participates in the development of print and electronic
reference collections in the humanities and social sciences, and participates
in collection development in assigned subject areas. The position may also
include responsibilities related to Library Services for Students with
Disabilities. The librarian consults and collaborates with other staff across
the Library system and promotes the vision of a team-based learning
organization. Responsibilities include evening and weekend work.
Required: An
Preferred: Fluency and/or academic background in one or more foreign
languages taught at Queen’s.
ENVIRONMENT
Queen's University Library comprises five major libraries in well-equipped
facilities. It serves a user community of approximately 18,000 students and 800
faculty with research collections exceeding 7 million items, more than 25,900
electronic journals and 570 databases, and a staff of 149. The Library's budget
exceeds $17 million. A team-based organization based on the goals of the
learning organization was introduced in 1999 to encourage innovation and
flexibility in meeting the service needs of the Library's user community.
The Learning & Research Services unit in Stauffer Library serves the
teaching and research needs of the humanities, social sciences and business
disciplines; services are provided by 6.4 librarians and 3 technicians in the
context of a consultative team-based organizational model.
Stauffer Library also houses: the Maps, Data & Government Information
Centre, supporting teaching and research across the university disciplines in
the areas of cartographic resources, geospatial data, statistical data and
government documents; the Access Services unit, providing circulation and
interlibrary loan services; the Queen’s Learning Commons, providing
academic support to all Queen’s students through collaboration between
the Library, IT Services, Learning Strategies Development, Library Services for
Students with Disabilities, and The Writing Centre.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
The academic staff at Queen’s University is governed by a Collective
Agreement between the Queen’s University Faculty Association (QUFA) and
the University, which is posted at http://www.queensu.ca/qufa/.
It is anticipated that the position will be filled at the rank of General
Librarian or Assistant Librarian. (Minimum salary for a General Librarian is
$46,079 and for an Assistant Librarian is $51,838.) Salary and rank will be
commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a non-renewable
limited-term replacement appointment available mid-August 2007 to April 30,
2008.
