WEEK OF MAY 14th
________________________

Monday, May 14th, 2-3pm ET (11am-12pm, PT)
The Board Chair and the CEO: Shared Leadership for Board Development
Part of the EFFECTIVE BOARDS 2007, no. 1 - an extraordinary new series for public library trustees
Effective Governance and the High Performance Board
with Ken Haycock - 1 hour AUDIO CONFERENCE

Most trustees realize they need training but many only receive a tour and a binder from the CEO and a hearty "welcome aboard" from the Chair.

Powerful, effective library boards are developed over time and a longer term plan for development makes good sense. What do trustees need to know? What are their roles? What are the topics? What are the priorities?

If you truly want a powerful board, you must learn how to develop powerful and knowledgeable trustees. Here is a vision of planning between the Chair of the Board and the CEO that challenges our everyday practice.

Tuesday, May 15th, 3-4pm ET (12-1pm, PT)
IM the library! Launching an IM reference service
with Amanda Etches-Johnson - 1 hour WEB CONFERENCE

This session explores the use of Instant Messaging to reach out to users and provides a road map for planning and launching an IM reference service at your library. Amanda will address the issues and provide strategies for dealing with those issues during every stage of the process: from planning, training, and staffing, to launching and evaluating your IM service.

Thursday, May 17th, 3-4pm ET (12-1pm, PT)
Learning to Learn -- the Ultimate Outcome for All Students!
with Ann Marlow Riedling - 1 hour AUDIO CONFERENCE

Academic institutions from K-12 to college and university all want their graduates to be independent life-long learners -- motivated to learn, and equipped with the 21st century skills and knowledge to do so independently.

This session will go well beyond just knowing how to "use" new and emerging technologies, and how to "surf" the Internet: it will move from physical access skills to mastering the understanding and assimilation of intellectual access skills that result in thoughtful, reflective learners.

As an educator, you assume the awesome responsibility of helping your students to master essential information literacy skills to succeed in the high-speed environment in which we live. This session will outline a simple, step-by-step guide to move through the research process proficiently.
