Job Summary: Basic purpose or primary function of the
job
Will be responsible for developing the medical ethics program,
directing ethics consultations, providing leadership, and creating ethics
education programs.
Job Responsibilities:
- Direct Ethics Consult service
- Assure timely, appropriate responses to consulting clinical staff
- Provide team development necessary to conduct consistent, thorough
and effective consultation
- Incorporate all clinical and patient/family perspectives as well as
other relevant staff or community members as necessary
- Develop follow-up systems necessary to address issues identified
- Establish metrics to evaluate performance of Ethics Consult service
- Provide Ethics leadership perspective prospectively
- Provide programmatic framework and perspective to prospectively
address ethical aspect of clinical situations, e.g.:
- New clinical programs/therapies with controversial components
- Clinical research approaches
- Relationship of education to clinical care
- Provide Ethics perspective and leadership at key committees, e.g.:
- Ethics Committee
- Patient Safety Committee
- Relevant committees in Nursing
- Establish Ethics education program
- Develop targeted program material appropriate for clinical groups:
- Medical staff
- Nursing staff
- Trainees
- Clinical practitioner, allied health and administrative staff
- Coordinate educational retreat for Ethics committee
- Serve as a mentor to clinicians seeking to advance their own formal
education and training in biomedical ethics
- Participate in continuing education programs and symposia as
appropriate, e.g.:
- Palliative care
- Pediatric access to limited health care resources (e.g. Behavioral
health)
- Develop Medical Ethics program
- Coordinate and integrate with existing services, e.g. research
ethics, palliative care.
- Define and recruit appropriate support staff as program established
- Develop training roles and research opportunities as program
established
- Establish links to the Center for Bioethics at the University of
Pennsylvania
- Promote peer review contributions and scholarly activity in relation
to Pediatric Clinical Ethics
Required Education and Experience Minimum education
required; cite years and type of experience
Masters degree required in Biomedical Ethics or related field; MD
preferred. Five years experience in the medical ethics
field.
Appointment at the University of Pennsylvania
may be available for qualified candidates.
