Systems Librarian

The Systems Librarian is responsible for managing and
maintaining the information technology infrastructure
required to support all Nunavut public library
operations, both for headquarters and community
libraries. This includes working with GN Informatics
and the Technical Services Assistant in operating and
maintaining the integrity of the Nunavut Public
Library Services (NPLS) database as part of the GN’s
automated library catalogue system, to national and
international library standards. The Systems Librarian
also maintains the NPLS website and the librarians’

You will be responsible for:
•       Administering the NPLS’s integrated library system
and automated catalogue on behalf of NPLS and partner
libraries to the standards dictated by NPLS policies
and national and international standards
•       Ensuring that all NPLS staff and community
librarians receive appropriate training and
documentation in all library related automated systems
•       Maintaining a web page for Nunavut Public Library
Services and moderating the librarians’ blog
•       Advising the Manager on the acquisition,
distribution and maintenance of various forms of
electronic resources and programs for public use
•       Serving as a liaison fro NPLS with other GN
information technology staff and related outside

As the ideal candidate you will have:
        MLIS from an accredited institution or
equivalent in educational training in library services
or information sciences, plus a minimum of 2 years
experience in a public library, information networks,
or schools setting
        Extensive knowledge of  information
technology standards and computer hardware and
software as they relate to library services, including
familiarity with information network structures,
telecommunications technology, large database
management, webpage development, automated cataloguing
systems operation, and various software platforms
        Knowledge of a number of national and
international standards for library automated
cataloguing and information transfer is required to
maintain library catalogue standards
        Skills in maintaining and troubleshooting
computer hardware and telecommunications hookups
        Ability to convey technical information in a
helpful, understanding way to co-workers with highly
varying levels of formal training and technical skills
        Knowledge of the internet, research tools and
public access issues
        Highly developed problem solving skills
        Strong ability to work independently

This position is included in the Nunavut Employees
Union (37.5 hours per week) and has a starting salary
of $67,860.00 per annum, plus a Northern Allowance of
$20,058.00 per annum.
