Basics of Web Site Management

Web site management can be a daunting task, especially for busy,
short-staffed libraries. This course will help library Web managers and
Web teams get a handle on what's involved in Web site management. 

This six week program will cover the basics of managing, designing, and
improving a library Web site. Topics will include Web site management
structure, software used in maintaining Web sites, basic design and
content tips, and emerging Web site trends.

The Benefits 

Participants will be leave with basic knowledge of how to manage a
library Web site; what software will work for their Web site; have a
structured way to design or redesign a Web site; have a basic usability
test in-hand to perform on their own Web sites; and know what types of
content they should focus their energies on. 

Who Should Participate? 

This course is designed for anyone who designs library Web sites, writes
content for their Web site, or wants to improve their Web site's
usefulness to their customers. 

Key Topics You Will Explore 

* Different "best practice" Web site management structures in libraries
* Software used for Web site management, including open source software
* Web site design, from user needs to visual design
* How to create a simple usability test, and how to interpret the
results
* Planning content for a library Web site
* Emerging library Web site trends 

Method of Instruction 

Each week, you'll receive an email with the lesson for that week, plus
practice exercises that will help you work through the week's sources
and reinforce your learning. A Web-based bulletin board will enable you
and other participants to ask questions of the instructor and to provide
on-line feedback about problems incurred. The course will include a
teleconference call with you and your fellow participants, hosted by the
instructor, to give advice and clarify the learning experience.

David King is currently the Acting Director of Information Technology
Services at Kansas City Public Library, and has years of experience in
Web site creation, planning, and design. He has spoken in the U.S. and
Canada about Web site usability, search engines, and Web marketing at
Netspeed, Computers in Libraries, Internet Librarian, Online World, and
at ALA. He has also been published in Online, Computers in Libraries,
and in Library Journal's NetConnect. David maintains a blog, "Dave's
