Literacy Services in the Public Library

Regina Public Library has developed an enormously successful one-to-one volunteer tutor program operated by a self-managed team to deliver literacy services in the system.

How this was developed, how it works, why it works are part of the topics to be discussed. 250 volunteers currently tutor at Regina Public Library in this award-winning literacy service.

The Benefits

* work effectively with adults learning English-as-a-Second Language or basic education.
* recruit, train, support and retain an active and enthusiastic volunteer base
* approach development of the workings for a self-managed team.

About The Presenters......

Alice Samkoe is a former elementary school teacher and homemaker for 21 years, who returned to university for an Adult Education degree in order to work as a literacy programmer. She has worked for RPL since 1992 and in its Literacy Unit since 1997.

Loretta Paoli joined the RPL in 2004. In her work she recruits and trains both ESL and ABE volunteer tutors for RPL's tutoring program. Loretta's background includes 10 years of experience as an adult ESL instructor.
