"Always a River, Sometimes a Library: Rick Anderson Reexamines
Library Practice and Patron Service"

Things are not okay. The information world has changed in deep,
fundamental ways, and our profession has responded by changing
reluctantly in superficial ways. Instead of seizing opportunities, we
have insisted on telling our patrons how much they ought to value us for
our unique ability to do things that they no longer want us to do. As a
result, our patrons are moving ahead and leaving us behind. Rick
Anderson, Director of Resource Acquisition at the University of Nevada,
explores the three ways the library profession is broken, and the four
ways to fix it. He uses the Mississippi River as a metaphor for patron
behavior, and gives us new and useful ways to think about our patrons.
Rick Anderson is the author of "Buying and Contracting for Resources
and Services: A How-to-Do-It Manual for Librarians" published by
Neal-Schuman in 2004 and in 2005 Rick was identified by Library Journal
as a "Mover & Shaker" - one of the "50 people shaping the future
of libraries."

Following the broadcast Michelle Paon, Coordinator of the Learning
Commons at the Killam Library, Dalhousie University, will tell
teleconference participants at the Provincial Library site about the
Learning Commons and how it is used.  The Learning Commons which was
officially opened in 2002 is an example of a way in which libraries are
adapting and changing to meet their patrons' needs.
