ASSISTANT UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN
DALHOUSIE LIBRARIES

Dalhousie University Libraries seeks an experienced librarian to coordinate
the development and management of its library collections within the
context of a dynamic scholarly communication and publishing
environment.  The individual we are seeking will undertake the challenge of
transforming accepted practices and attitudes related to collection
building and organization by taking advantage of new technologies and new
emerging relationships between content suppliers and users.

The Assistant University Librarian will work with a team of
multi-disciplinary subject specialists/library liaison staff in the Killam,
Kellogg Health Sciences and Sexton Design and Technology libraries.  He/she
will report directly to the University Librarian and serve on the
University Librarian's Council responsible for the overall management and
development of the Dalhousie Libraries.

  Dalhousie Libraries, as members of Novanet, a Nova Scotia academic
library consortium, share the Geac ADVANCE library management system.  The
consortium is currently in the process of acquiring a new system (Ex
Libris, Aleph 500) to be implemented by January 2006.   Additional

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate must have a Master's degree or equivalent from an
ALA-accredited program; extensive experience in collection development and
dealing with library vendors; and experience with budget management.

The preferred candidate will have good interpersonal skills; the ability to
create and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and
library patrons individually and in groups; a high degree of flexibility
and openness to change; strong communication abilities; a collaborative and
enthusiastic outlook; and the ability to work openly and effectively with
diverse user groups.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience with approval plans and donor relations;  a thorough
understanding of bibliographic sources and processes, collection
assessment, knowledge of the publishing trade and an interest in
preservation; and working knowledge of one or more automated library
management systems.

AVAILABILITY OF POSITION:

The position is available immediately. This is a full-time probationary
appointment. Rank and salary are dependent upon qualifications and
experience, and subject to the terms of the Dalhousie Faculty Association
Collective Agreement.
