COURSE DESCRIPTION

 This course will focus on the design of web literacy and learning
experiences to support curriculum from K-8.We will explore web sites
that support curriculum as well as ready-made web-based activities and
how to evaluate their usefulness. Participants will have opportunities
to apply the elements of good design to their own curriculum objectives
as they review and evaluate existing web-based activities. Our goal is
to engage students in sound curriculum activities where students are
building understanding while thinking critically and creatively.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

 This course is best suited for those who already have a fair knowledge
of web searching. Teachers and teacher-librarians serving the K-8
grades, computer teachers, information literacy consultants, and key
literacy teachers and coordinators will find the content of this course
relevant and timely.

    EUR     Strategies to develop web literacy
    EUR     Web resources to promote independent reading
    EUR     Exploration of curriculum based learning activities
available on the web
    EUR     Evaluation of these activities in respect to personal
curriculum need
    EUR     Design of web-related learning activities to achieve higher
order thinking

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION

 Each week, you'll receive an e-mail with the lesson for that week, plus
practice exercises that will help you work through the week's sources
and reinforce your learning. A web-based bulletin board will enable you
and other participants to ask question of the instructor and to provide
on-line feedback about problems incurred. The course will include a
teleconference call with you and your fellow participants, hosted by the
instructor, to give advice and clarify the learning experience.

HOW YOU WILL BENEFIT

 Participants will become familiar with sites that help build student
reading skills and support curriculum content for K-8 students. You will
understand various types of web-based learning activities and learn how
to separate the good from the not-so-good. You will gain strategies to
tackle plagiarism as we explore the criteria for designing engaging and
effective web-related student activities.

Instructor Biography

 Carol Koechlin recently retired as an Instructional Leader for the
Toronto District School Board. Carol has co-authored (with Sandi Zwaan)
five internationally-recognized books on the teaching of information
literacy, and has written many articles for professional journals. She
continues to consult in the fields of information literacy and school
librarianship, and is a popular conference presenter and workshop
leader.
