TELECONFERENCE SERIES ON RURAL LIBRARIANSHIP

Please excuse cross-posting of this message.
****************************************************************

The Nova Scotia Provincial Library will be hosting Rural Librarianship
~ a four- part teleconference series with Bernard Vavrek, Director of
the Center for the Study of Rural Librarianship, Clarion University of
Pennsylvania and Founder of the Association of Rural and Small
Libraries. This is a Continuing Professional Development program of the
Canadian Library Association.

Librarians and library workers in rural and small libraries face
different challenges from those in urban areas with dense populations.
This four-part series will articulate the challenges faced by rural and
small libraries, foster community building based on shared experience,
and provide training in key areas, such as practical marketing,
collecting information about your user community and grant proposal
writing. "Part 1: Overview of issues facing librarians in rural and
small libraries in Canada and the United States" will take place on
April 19th.

IN THIS SESSION BERNARD VAVREK WILL DISCUSS ISSUES SUCH AS:
How do you define rural? What does it mean to provide services in a
rural or small library? How do you develop a sense of professional
community when you are in a small library system which serves a small
population that is spread over a large county catchment area? This
program identifies the similar concerns facing library workers in the
rural or small library context, and identifies resources for rural
librarians and those working in small libraries.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Library and information staff working in rural and small libraries.
Trustees and board members for small library systems.
Those with an interest in advocacy and capacity building within the
library and information community.
