Staying Up To Date in the Ever-Changing Library World

Change is a constant in libraries. New databases, new search engines, copyright updates, ethical issues - it's all important, but how do you stay up to date without sacrificing other important work? And how do you choose the best resources to help you with your current awareness activities?

COURSE DESCRIPTION

 In this six week program, you'll learn strategies for identification, selection, and monitoring of current awareness tools. The course will cover a variety of electronic sources of information. You will have a chance to practice selecting and using several different types of tools, including mailing lists, weblogs, newsfeed/RSS tools and software, and web page monitoring services.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

 This course is for anyone who needs to improve their ability to stay up to date on important library issues and find ways to effectively and efficiently organize and track their selected resources. Librarians, senior library technicians, and reference providers at all levels will benefit from this program.

    €     Setting goals and objectives for your current awareness activities
    €     Electronic newsletters and mailing lists - selection and subscribing
    €     Using on-line journals with new issue alerts
    €     Weblogs and RSS feeds - selection and use
    €     Introduction to newsreader software
    €     Using web page monitor services and tools
    €     Strategies to facilitate current awareness in your library

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION

 Each week, you'll receive an e-mail with the lesson for that week, plus practice exercises that will help you work through the week's sources and reinforce your learning. A web-based bulletin board will enable you and other participants to ask question of the instructor and to provide on-line feedback about problems incurred. The course will include a teleconference call with you and your fellow participants, hosted by the instructor, to give advice and clarify the learning experience.

HOW YOU WILL BENEFIT

 Participants will be introduced to a wide variety of web resources for current awareness. You will have the opportunity to use high quality specialized tools for facilitating current awareness and effective use of these resources. You will develop a set of objectives for your own current awareness, and discuss strategies to improve current awareness in your local setting.

Instructor Biographies

 Rita Vine is Canada's best-known Internet search trainer. She is the co-founder of Workingfaster.com, which helps professionals break through the clutter of the Internet and access information that matters. Rita has been a professional librarian for over 20 years, and has held positions at the University of Calgary and University of Toronto libraries. She is also the lead selector of the Search Portfolio, a web site selection service for libraries seeking to deliver the best of the web to their staff and users. Rita's article, "Staying Up To Date in the Ever Changing Web Search World" appears in the March 2004 issue of Information Outlook.

 Denise Bisson retired in the spring of 2003 from Algonquin College in Ottawa, where she was a senior librarian and co-ordinator of the library's web user support materials. Denise has extensive experience in developing and delivering training on selecting and using Internet resources, and has designed and delivered a variety of on-line courses for the College. Denise currently serves on the training and Internet resource selection team at Workingfaster.com.
