Instructor: Dr. Norman Horrocks, BA (Western Australia), MLS, PhD (Pittsburgh),
Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals
(UK), Associate of the Library Association of Australia

Dr. Norman Horrocks is a member of the American Institute of Parliamentarians. A
member, secretary and chair of countless committees, he has given workshops on
Committee Procedures and Parliamentary Practice for a number of years. He has
served as Parliamentarian for non-profit organizations in both Canada and the
United States. Currently he is an editorial consultant for Scarecrow Press of
Lanham, Maryland, and an adjunct professor in the Dalhousie School of Library
and Information Studies.

Anyone who serves on a committee in any setting, whether as a member, secretary
or chair

9:00 a.m.-9:15 a.m. Introductions

9:15 a.m.-10:30 a.m. The Real Role of the Committee Chair: how to organize
meetings so that people come prepared.

10:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Break (Provided by SLIS)

11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Getting things done — Staying on time and on track: how to
deal with those who cannot stay on the topic or who have an axe to grind.

12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m. Lunch Break (on your own)

1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. The Role of the Committee Secretary: how to handle an annual
business meeting and committee reports at this meeting.

2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Rules of order: which ones are used, how and why.
