We are seeking an experienced, dynamic librarian to provide leadership
in the delivery of public library services in Nova Scotia. The
Provincial Librarian will work with public librarians and other
information professionals to provide for the evolving information needs
of Nova Scotians. Given that the 77 public libraries in Nova Scotia's
regional library system are fully automated and provide public access to
the Internet, the Provincial Librarian is responsible for providing
leadership in the area of library technology. With a staff of 23 and an
annual budget of $1.5m, the Nova Scotia Provincial Library administers
the Libraries Act and Regulations, coordinates library services
throughout the province and promotes library cooperation at provincial
and national levels. In addition, it operates and supports NcompasS, an
automated library system and network, which provides access to the
holdings of major Nova Scotia libraries and a gateway to other library
and information databases. The Provincial Librarian manages the
operation of the Provincial Library which provides expert consulting and
reference services, centralized cataloguing and database management and
training to client libraries, as well as administering $10.6m in grants
to regional public libraries.


Post graduate degree from an ALA-accredited program of library and
information studies plus substantial experience in progressively
responsible positions, including several years in a senior capacity
managing a team of professionals and at least five years in a public
library setting. Emphasis will be on strong management skills, including
budgeting, human resource management, long range planning and policy
development; knowledge of current library technologies; experience in
community relations, facility and technology management. This position
requires a professional with excellent communication and interpersonal
skills as well as a demonstrated ability to lead as well as to build and
maintain strong relationships with public librarians. Occasional travel
will be required.

Classification Range: MCP 25

Salary Range: $60,044 - $78,057
