Choosing and Using Web Resources for Teens

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Librarians, educators, parents, and - yes, even teens -- need help finding
Web sites that respond to the educational, social, and recreational needs of
teenagers without manipulating them for commercial goals. In this six-week
on-line course, you will learn how to build a solid repertoire of good
quality teen-focussed resources, and empower teens to search and use the Web
wisely.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Librarians and teachers who work with teens and wish to expand their
knowledge of Web resources. Basic Web knowledge is recommended.
KEY TOPICS YOU WILL EXPLORE ON-LINE
€ How teens find information
€ Criteria for selecting Web sites for teens
€ How to use search tools for teens
€ Training teens on wise web searching
€ Do filters help or hinder teens?
METHOD OF INSTRUCTION
Each week, you'll receive an email with the lesson for that week, plus
practice exercises that will help you work through the week's sources and
reinforce your learning. A web-based bulletin board will enable you and
other participants to ask question of the instructor and to provide on-line
feedback about problems incurred. The course will include a teleconference
call with you and your fellow participants, hosted by the instructor, to
give advice and clarify the learning experience.
HOW YOU WILL BENEFIT
You will gain a solid theoretical and practical basis to help you answer
reference questions, educate teens, and devise Web-based programming.

Instructor Biography
Todd Kyle has worked in teen and children's library services for the
Mississauga Library System for 12 years, where he has led initiatives
involving school-public library cooperation, research skills training, youth
programming, and early literacy. Todd is currently President of the Canadian
Association of Children's Librarians, and a frequent contributor to
educational programs and conferences.
