Duties: We are seeking an Assistant Library Automation Specialist to provide ongoing support in the use of the Integrated Library System (ILS) shared by 8 regional public libraries outside Halifax, the Provincial Library and other members of the NcompasS consortium. Regional public libraries depend upon this system for daily service delivery to the public. Under the supervision of the Automation Specialist, the incumbent is responsible for maintaining basic database quality, providing 8 x 5 help desk service and advice to client libraries, developing documentation and assisting with training of users. She/He investigates and resolves ILS software problems, liaises with the vendor to resolve issues and works with the system administrator to ensure system functionality. The Assistant Automation specialist develops and maintains a customized web catalogue interface for each NcompasS member library and manages the Extranet web site (controlled access site for member libraries). The NcompasS consortium is currently migrating from DRA MultiLIS to Sirsi's Unicorn library management software , with a live date early in 2005. Qualifications: You will have a bachelor's degree plus a post-graduate degree (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA accredited programme in Library and Information Studies. You have demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills with a high level of attention to detail; understand library cataloguing standards; have experience working with the MARC record; and technical experience with automated library systems. You have proven skills in web programming, web design and html, as well as experience with other internet applications plus proficiency in Windows XP and office applications in a networked environment. Knowledge of Unix is an asset. Excellent interpersonal, communication, writing and presentation skills are required, as well as experience in training adults. Knowledge of Nova Scotia public libraries, previous experience in library technical services or systems, and experience in using DRA/MultiLIS or Unicorn are highly desirable.
