POSITION VACANCY AT QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY LIBRARY

GIS/Maps Librarian
Continuing Track Appointment; Available January 1, 2005; NEW POSITION


Queen's University Library requires an innovative, energetic and
service-oriented GIS/Maps Librarian.  Reporting to the Head of the
Documents Unit in Stauffer Library, and working as part of a team, the
GIS/Maps Librarian is primarily responsible for identifying, developing,
promoting, delivering and evaluating Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
and print cartographic information services.  Working with librarians in
Stauffer Library and across the Library system, provides
reference/information and instruction services, specializing in GIS/maps
and providing support for government documents and data.  Develops,
coordinates and manages geospatial (print and electronic)
collections.  Develops web-based resources to support programs and
services, including the creation of web pages to deliver information,
software, metadata and geospatial files to users.  Participates in the
management of the Documents Unit.  Consults and collaborates with other
staff across the Library system and promotes the vision of a team-based
learning organization.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:  An ALA accredited MLIS or equivalent with a strong academic
background, preferably at the Master's level, in geography, GIS, or closely
related discipline; working knowledge of common GIS software tools (e.g.
ArcInfo, ArcGIS, MapInfo) and geospatial files; high degree of computer
literacy; strong leadership qualities; energetic, flexible, creative,
proactive approach to service; teaching ability; ability to work under
pressure in a challenging and rapidly changing environment; ability to work
effectively in both a team-based and self-directed environment; excellent
interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.

Preferred:  Previous reference experience and knowledge of social sciences
and government structure.

ENVIRONMENT:

Queen's University Library comprises five major libraries in well-equipped
facilities. It serves a user community of approximately 18,000 students and
800 faculty with research collections exceeding 7 million items, an
extensive array of electronic resources, a staff of 160 and a budget
exceeding $16 million. A team-based organization based on the goals of the
learning organization was introduced in 1999 to encourage innovation and
flexibility in meeting the service needs of the Library's users.

Stauffer Library serves the teaching and research needs of the
undergraduates, graduates, faculty and researchers in the humanities and
social sciences.  Its Documents Unit combines the expertise and resources
of three related areas.  The Map and Air Photo Collection houses the
University's primary map collection. It is a rich collection of current and
historical cartographic resources - maps, atlases, air photos, a small book
and journal collection on relevant topics, and a growing body of digital
cartographic resources.  The Social Science Data Centre provides access to
a broad range of survey and other statistical data from a wide range of
sources, including Statistics Canada's Data Liberation Initiative (DLI) and
the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research
(ICPSR).  Government Documents is a depository library for Canadian
federal, Ontario provincial, United Nations and European Union documents,
and also collects from other provinces and territories, municipalities,
foreign countries (e.g. United States and United Kingdom), and
international agencies such as the OECD.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

The academic staff at Queen's University are governed by a Collective
Agreement between the Queen's University Faculty Association (QUFA) and the
University, which is posted at

that the position will be filled at the rank of General Librarian or
Assistant Librarian. (Minimum salary for a General Librarian is $42,149 and
for an Assistant Librarian is $47,418.) Salary and rank will be
commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a continuing track
appointment available January 1, 2005.
