ASSOCIATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN,  DALHOUSIE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES

Position availability:  July 1, 2004

Dalhousie University Libraries is seeking an experienced, forward-looking 
and enthusiastic individual to serve as Associate University Librarian.

Possessing a strong service ethic, the Associate University Librarian will 
advise and assist the University Librarian in the management of the 
libraries and act for him in his absence.  He/she will provide support and 
advice for Associates and Heads in Human Resources matters in consultation 
with University Personnel Services, as required.  A critical function of 
the position is to provide leadership in delivering an array of public 
services in response to the needs of a diverse user community by taking 
full advantage of the opportunities provided by current and emerging 
information technologies and the skills of staff.

DESIRED ABILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate will have an MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA 
accredited institution or comparable educational qualifications; 
familiarity with library automation and technologies; demonstrated 
management skills developed in a variety of settings and locations and 
through increasing levels of responsibility within libraries, preferably in 
an academic environment; experience in a public services environment and in 
the effective delivery of instructional services; experience in human 
resource management; and evidence of active participation in library 
professional associations.

The successful candidate will also possess excellent interpersonal and 
communication skills; be an innovator and self-starter; have a strong sense 
of honesty and integrity; exhibit energy and enthusiasm; be flexible and 
resilient; and possess a strong sense of humour.

AVAILABILITY OF THE POSITION:

The position is available July 1, 2004, subject to final budget approval. 
This is a full-time appointment outside the bargaining unit.  Rank and 
salary are dependent upon qualifications and experience.  The position 
carries a stipend.
